Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula. It is a cosmopolitan city which possesses a modern infrastructure but, at the same time, has been able to preserve its historic neighborhoods and streets.Â
The city can trace its origins all the way back to the Arab Emir Mohamed I in the 850s which was later conquered by Alonso VI in the 11th century. In the 19th century Joseph Bonaparte undertook some great reforms and built the commercial street known as the Gran Via, however, some of the most beautiful buildings are mainly Baroque and neoclassical from the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Plaza Mayor or the Royal Palace. Â You'll not want to miss some of Madrid's landmarks such as the Buen Retiro Park, the Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, the Royal Palace, the Gran Via, and, of course, the Plaza Mayor.
