Barcelona is a fascinating city with a long and rich history that you'll definitely want to include it on your itinerary in Spain. Whether you are interested in seeing the most famous works of Antoni Gaudi (especially the cathedral he designed called the Sagrada Familia), or want to see the Olympic Village where the 1992 Olympic Games were held, or see the Old Port,

World famous Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí was born in 1852 in Reus, province of Tarragona, the son of a coppersmith who from early childhood was attracted to colours, forms and geometry.  Gaudi suffered several times from rheumatic fever in his youth and spent a lot of time in isolation.

If you are visiting Barcelona and are looking for a day trip outside the city, we recommend heading up to the monastery and Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria on the Montserrat Mountain. It is only 45 kilometers northwest of Barcelona and definitely worth the trip.  You can either go by car and drive up the winding mountain road or take an hour and a half train ride from Barcelona.  The views of this majestic rocky mountain, the Abbey and the Catalonia landscape below are quite spectacular. If you would like your own private tour and guide, check out our Spain Customized ToursSpain Customized Tours.
