When people think of Spanish wines names like La Rioja or Ribera del Duero jump to mind but there are also other regions in Spain that produce excellent wine. Â Most don't realize that Madrid has a wine region all of its own called "Vinos de Madrid". Â Even though Madrid's wine history dates back to the 13th century, the "Vinos de Madrid" Domination of Origin dates only to 1990. Â
The wine region consists of 44 vineyards that cover an area of 7,700 hectares and produce around 20 million liters of wine annually. Â Vinos of Madrid are known for its young wines including whites, roses and reds. Madrid wineries blend tradition and innovation using clay vats and centennial caves. Â If you live in the United States your local wine shops will soon have more wines from Madrid because "Vinos de Madrid" has launched a marketing initiative in the U.S.
Â
If you are visiting Madrid you might want to take the opportunity of taking a Madrid wine excursion. There is a day tour of the wineries on Tuesdays and Fridays that leaves at 9:30 am. Â The tour includes visiting three wineries with a tasting at each one, lunch with traditional dishes, an English-speaking guide who is a specalist in the field, and transportation.Â
